What is ruah?

RUAH is a weekly worship service on Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 8:30pm at the Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach, located at 16711 West Dixie Highway. There is plenty of free parking.

RUAH is grounded in the Anglican tradition, a centuries-old liturgy that reveals the presence of God in our midst. We call this reality "sacramental." RUAH brings forth the richness of the mysteries of the Christian faith, practiced through the centuries by monks, nuns, mystics, saints, and ordinary people.

RUAH will engage the musical community in Miami and surrounding areas by bringing in guest musicians for each season who play instruments from around the world. Classical hymns and prayers are arranged with modern and ancient instrumentation, rhythms, and sounds. We will cross centuries and continents as we worship together in the liturgy the roots of which are in the earliest Christian community that was gathered after Jesus was raised from the dead.

RUAH, which means "spirit" or "breath" in Hebrew, invites all people, no matter your faith background, or no faith background at all, to breathe in God's living Spirit, and to rest in the beauty and wonder of the spoken word and the real presence of Christ among us with a backdrop of sound, light, shadow, and form.

The video below was created at Saint John's Cathedral, Denver CO, and is an example of what RUAH will look, sound, and feel like. RUAH is inspired by the partnership of Mishkhah and the Ancient Spanish monastery. Mishkhah creates worship that is multisensory with and for churches, seminaries and individuals nationally. Visit www.mishkhah.com to learn more.

Mishkhah exists to foster worship and prayer environments that enable us to fall into the embrace of our Creator. New rhythms in our breathing open us to ancient truths. We sense the possibility of healing and move out into the world again, restored and hopeful. Visit mishkhah.com for more information.

The VIA sacra

The Via Sacra or 'sacred way'

Each worship service includes a special time for personal prayer and reflection. All are invited to move from their seats to light a candle for someone in need or for a personal prayer need. There are also several stations with icons, Scripture and poetry readings, questions to ponder, oils and fresh herbs to smell and items to hold or take away.

All of this is accompanied by live instrumental music which invites us to take a breath and to notice where we are in this world at this time. We begin to let go of our cares and concerns and listen to our own heartbeat. In time, we are able to listen anew to the spirit of God.
